While you may not have the money to renovate and redecorate your home completely, there are a few touches you can add that will refresh the look of your home. A good place to start is with cushions, which can be bought relatively cheaply from your local Spotlight store. If you find ones that have removable covers, you can change the look of your home every couple of months, by using a different coloured cushion throughout the lounge and bedrooms. The same can be done with throw rugs, which can be placed over a lounge or chair to add a different colour scheme to a room. |

But there are a few plant varieties that are tough enough to withstand such heat and will help keep your garden alive all year round. Many native-Australian plants, such as Wysteria and Emu Bush, are able to withstand drought-like weather because those are the conditions they have most commonly adapted to. The same can be said for plants from the Mediterranean, such as Thyme and Lavender. One of the tricks to caring for drought-tolerant plants is to give them long drinks of water sporadically, rather than regular short drinks, as this teaches them to withstand long periods without water. Ask at your local nursery for more drought-resistant plant varieties. |

If you've never hosted one before, putting on a kid's birthday party can be a daunting task. But there are a few sure-fire tactics that will ensure that everyone has a good time. First of all, choose a theme – whether it's pirates, princesses or dinosaurs – as this will help you when choosing decorations and the cake, plus the excitement of a costume is a great way to get everyone into the party mood. Another great activity to keep little hands and minds occupied is a treasure hunt (this works best in the garden where there are plenty of hiding places under rocks and bushes, etc.) – but make sure there's a treasure chest full of toys and lollies at the end that everyone can share. Finally, the good old-fashioned egg-and-spoon race is a fun way to get everyone involved and use up any excess energy! |

We're lucky that even in winter we can spend time outdoors without freezing to death, but that said, we still need some extra warmth to keep us cosy for those evening barbecues on the back porch. But if you're going to be using outdoor heating, don't forget to take the appropriate safety measures, particularly if you have small children who could burn themselves, and be sure to keep the heaters away from any flammable material. |
